TL;DR

A business consultant is hired to solve a defined problem and hand over a deliverable, then the engagement ends. A business advisor works with the owner over time across the whole business and is judged on whether the company changes. Choose a consultant for a project with a clear endpoint, an advisor for ongoing change.

The core difference

Both bring outside expertise, but they are structured differently and solve different problems. A consultant is engaged for a defined scope — a project, a plan, an implementation — and the relationship ends when the deliverable lands. An advisor is engaged for ongoing judgement, working alongside the owner across the whole business rather than on one bounded task.

Side by side

Ends whenThe deliverable is handed overThe systems are installed and running

Both are directive; the difference is scope and duration.
A consultant leaves you a deliverable. An advisor leaves you a business that runs differently.

Which do you need?

Decide by what you want to be true in six months. If the answer is a finished thing — a market-entry plan, a new system implemented, a valuation prepared — that is consulting, with a clear start and end. If the answer is a changed reality — you are no longer the bottleneck, the business prices with confidence, growth no longer depends on your hours — that is advisory, because the thing that has to change is how the business runs.

The expensive mistake is buying consulting when the problem is structural. A consultant will deliver a polished plan; if the reason nothing changes is that every decision still routes through the owner, that plan joins the others in a drawer.

Where ProGlobal fits

ProGlobal is an advisory firm — we work with owners over time to install the systems that remove whatever is capping the business, and we are measured on whether the company actually changes, not on producing a report. If what you need is a one-off project with a defined endpoint, a consultant may be the better fit, and we will say so.

Is a business advisor more expensive than a consultant?

Usually the opposite per engagement — consultants often cost more upfront because they are doing the work, while advisory retainers are lower per month but run longer. Compare total cost against the outcome, not the monthly figure.

Can the same person be both?

Yes, and many are. What matters is that the engagement is clear about which mode you are buying: a bounded project, or ongoing change across the business.

Do I need an advisor or a consultant for a business plan?

A written plan is a defined deliverable, so that is consulting. An advisor helps when the challenge is executing and sustaining change over time, not producing a document.

Key takeaways

  • Consultant = a defined project with an endpoint and a deliverable.
  • Advisor = an ongoing relationship judged on whether the business changes.
  • Choose by your six-month goal: a finished thing, or a changed reality.
  • Buying consulting for a structural problem leaves you a plan nobody executes.
